3rd - 5th Grade

At St. Francis Xavier School, we believe that the elementary years, specifically 3rd through 5th grade, are a crucial time for fostering academic growth, character development, and spiritual awareness. Rooted in the Ignatian tradition, our program is dedicated to educating the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—in an environment influenced by Jesuit values such as reflection, discernment, service, and excellence.

Educating the Whole Child

We understand that students in these years are transitioning into more independent thinkers, eager to explore new concepts and engage with the world around them. Our approach embraces a holistic educational model that nurtures each child’s unique talents while fostering growth in every aspect of their being. By embedding Ignatian pedagogy—context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation—into our curriculum, we aim to develop students who are thoughtful, compassionate, and committed to being "Kids for Others."
mind
Intellectual growth during 3rd through 5th grade is foundational for lifelong learning. We cultivate curiosity and critical thinking through hands-on learning, problem-solving, and exploration. Our curriculum blends core academic subjects—such as literacy, mathematics, and science—with creative projects that encourage students to think deeply, make connections, and express themselves with confidence.
body
In these years, physical development continues to play a key role in a child's growth. Our program emphasizes physical education, team sports, and outdoor activities that promote both fine and gross motor skills. We also stress the importance of healthy habits and self-care, teaching students to respect and appreciate their bodies as gifts from God.
spirit
As a Jesuit institution, spiritual formation is central to our mission. We guide students in developing their relationship with God through regular prayer, participation in Mass, and meaningful service opportunities. Students are encouraged to reflect on their faith, appreciate the beauty of God’s creation, and engage in acts of kindness and justice. The Ignatian principles of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and Magis (striving for excellence) inspire students to grow spiritually and ethically, seeking purpose and meaning in all that they do.

Curriculum

language arts
At St. Francis Xavier School, we utilize the Amplify ELA program in grades 3 through 5 to foster a deep love for reading, critical thinking, and effective communication. This innovative curriculum engages students with rich texts, interactive activities, and thought-provoking discussions.

Aligned with our Ignatian values, Amplify ELA encourages students to reflect on their learning, develop empathy through diverse perspectives, and strive for excellence in their literacy skills. By connecting academic rigor with our mission to educate the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—Amplify ELA helps our students become thoughtful and compassionate learners, prepared to serve and lead in their communities.

math
The SFX math program for grades 3-5 fosters a deep sense of curiosity, encouraging all students to enthusiastically explore the world of numbers and problem-solving. As part of our approach, we actively promote an open dialogue around mathematics, emphasizing the development of "eloquentia perfecta" or effective communication, enabling students to articulate their thoughts and ideas with clarity and precision. Understanding that every student has their unique strengths and learning styles, we provide a diverse array of tools and resources, empowering them to tackle mathematical challenges from different angles. By embracing the individual qualities of each student, we create an inclusive atmosphere where every child can thrive and develop a strong foundation in mathematics while nurturing a lifelong passion for learning.

Currently, 3rd Grade through 5th Grade classes use Eureka Math Squared, as our core math curriculum.

Religion
Religious education at St. Francis Xavier is a priority and critical to our school’s mission of forming kids for others. Based on Diocesan curriculum standards and using Ignatian (Jesuit) pedagogy, the religion curriculum helps students learn about their faith and grow closer to God.

Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade learn about the faith in daily religion class using St. Mary’s Press Discover series, a scripture based curriculum. Students in 3rd grade learn about and prepare to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Eucharist.

As part of their sacrament preparation, students in 3rd grade participate in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program which introduces children to the teachings of the Catholic faith through hands-on activities. Central to the program is the "atrium," a carefully prepared space where children can engage with religious materials, fostering a deeper understanding of scripture, liturgy, and the life of Christ. Through quiet reflection and guided interaction, children develop a personal relationship with God, growing in their faith at their own pace.
